Masque Deangle, a Dan mask from Côte d'Ivoire dating to the mid-20th century, from a private collection, height 52 cm, width 1 cm, depth 1 cm, weight 1 g, in excellent condition, sold with stand.
Description from the seller
Height with the base: 52 cm
Originating from the Dan peoples of Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia, the Deangle (or Deanglé) masks hold a special place in African art. Unlike war or initiation masks, the Deangle are masks of peace and mediation, used to soothe conflicts, settle disputes, or celebrate reconciliation between villages or individuals.
Sculpted from lightweight yet durable wood, such as the fromager or the samba, these masks are recognizable by their oval faces, fine features, and serene expressions. Their almond-shaped eyes, straight noses, and mouths often closed or smiling give them a reassuring and benevolent appearance.
Some Deangle masks bear a small beard or ritual scars, symbols of wisdom and experience.
The surface of the masks is carefully polished and covered with a smooth patina, ranging from golden brown to deep black, achieved by applying plant dyes or natural pigments. Their glossy finish and neat appearance reflect their pacifying role and their importance in conflict-resolution ceremonies.
In the Dan tradition, the Deangle masks appear at public gatherings, negotiations, or celebrations marking the end of a dispute. They are worn by mediator dancers who, moving with grace, embody the spirit of reconciliation and dialogue. Their presence recalls the importance of social harmony and mutual respect.
The making of a Deangle mask follows a rigorous process, in accordance with the rules of the Dan society. The sculptor, often an experienced craftsman, works the wood with traditional tools, then applies natural substances to protect it and sacralize it. Each mask, unique in its details, remains a symbol of peace and community cohesion.
Today, these masks are also appreciated for their artistic value and their universal message of reconciliation, illustrating how art can serve as a bridge between people.
