Masque Yohouré from Côte d'Ivoire, provenance private collection; height 52 cm, width 1 cm, depth 1 cm; excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Originating from the Yohouré people of Côte d’Ivoire, these masks are recognizable by their imposing horns, often in an arc, and by their oval face with stylized features.
Carved from wood as hard as iroko, they feature a straight nose, a discreet mouth, and almond-shaped eyes, sometimes outlined with natural pigments.
Covered with a dark or reddish patina, obtained through the application of plant-based dyes, these masks embody protective spirits or ancestors.
They take part in initiation ceremonies, funerals, or agricultural festivals, where their appearance symbolizes strength, justice, and a connection with the invisible world.
Their manufacture, reserved for initiated artisans, follows a precise ritual: the wood is carved, polished, then treated with sacred substances. Each mask, unique, reflects the values and history of the Yohouré community. Today, they are also valued for their artistic and cultural significance.
