A mahogany game table in the Directoire style dating to circa 1800, with a curved half-moon form and a 110 cm diameter and 72 cm height.
Description from the seller
Gaming table, mahogany wood, Directory, circa 1800 – France
Elegant and timeless mahogany game table with a half-moon shape from the Directory period, late 18th century. It rests on legs with pilasters finished with wooden pads. It features a refined and classic playing surface with a green felt pad.
Its curved profile, faceted legs, and discreet drawer reflect the neoclassical aesthetic characteristic of design from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its balanced proportions and sober details make it the ideal choice as a desk, console, side table, or game table, in both classical and contemporary interiors. It hardly features any ornamental details, as the beauty of the piece lies in the wood itself with which it is made, in warm tones and pronounced grain.
The felt surface provides a practical and luxurious work area, while the drawer offers subtle storage without altering the clean lines. When fully extended, the table reaches a diameter of 110 centimeters. It can also be placed with the top half open and leaning against the wall, as shown in the photo, creating a highly decorative and sophisticated look.
The Directory style is a furniture and decoration style that developed in France during the period when the Directory was in effect (1795-1799) and marks the transition between the Louis XVI and Empire styles. It is a neoclassical-inspired style, characterized by the simplicity of its lines, inspired by Roman objects from the 1st century AD, originating from the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This revival of classical taste was evident in painting, furniture, and fashion, especially in women's clothing.
During this period, France was experiencing significant political and social changes, which were reflected in furniture with a more rational and functional approach. Symmetry in the drawer design and the balanced proportion of the furniture as a whole are key features of the classical furniture of these times. Unlike earlier styles, such as Rococo, the Directoire style is characterized by more moderate decoration. The drawer handles and legs feature simple geometric details and classical motifs.
