A 17th‑century Flemish polychromed wood sculpture of Saint John, 92 cm high, unsigned and in good condition.
Description from the seller
Sculpture of Saint John (St Jean in French) in polychromed wood — Flemish school — 17th century — 92 cm
Description
Important religious sculpture in carved and polychromed wood representing Saint John, a work of the Flemish school of the 17th century.
The saint is depicted standing in a contemplative attitude, his hand brought back to the chest. The young face with full, serene features corresponds to the traditional iconographic type of Saint John, while the ample drapery, deeply carved, reflects the vocabulary of Flemish Baroque sculpture intended for church decoration.
Realized in round (carved all around) with a roughly worked reverse, the sculpture was meant to be presented in a niche or backed against an altar. The volumes are solid and legible, characteristic of a 17th-century religious workshop production.
The old polychromy partially remains, with an patina of use and traces of old retouching testifying to its liturgical history.
Height: 92 cm.
Condition in keeping with age: wear, losses at the level of the hands, and partial polychromy. Sound structure.
The photos are an integral part of the object's description and complete its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The object will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
