Oud-Roman Bronze Eyes-Fibula in excellent condition, measuring 32 mm high, 62 mm wide and 27 mm deep, dating to the 1st century, acquired in 1992 from the Netherlands.
Description from the seller
Beautiful, naturally patinated ‘eye fibula’ (27 BC – 75 AD)
The ogenfibula was found around 1986 near the Waal in the Netherlands in the clay. The ogenfibula shown here is of the same type as that in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden.
Unlike the RMO's copy, this one is complete and not restored.
Info RMO: Bronze closed-eye fibula, Haalebos type Ac. Fine, large fibula with pearl inlay on the clasp and a double incised V on the foot. The two-piece clasp is toothed. Distribution: Rhine and Danube provinces.
An ogenfibula is a type of cloak pin from the early Roman period (c. 27 BC – AD 75). These bronze brooches were used in Roman times to fasten garments such as cloaks.
Design: Ogenfibulae belong to the boogfibulae, a type that was common in Roman times.
They are a popular object of study within archaeology and are often found at excavations in the Netherlands, such as in the Region of Nijmegen’s Realm. Two fibulae, of which one is a Roman eye fibula.
