Description from the seller
This lot features a earthenware jug created in german town of Durlach, most likely comissioned for the wedding between "Georg Walther & Maria Schaferin" or as a gift for the mentioned couple. The couple names and date of creation "1805" are written on the upper part in germanic letters, while man character accompanied by the lady are portrayed in nature when horse ploughing the land, both figures presented with elegant clothing and in a good mood. From 1723 until 19th century, the Durlach faience manufactory remained the leading ceramics workshop in Baden. Manufactory supplied the court, nobility and bourgeoisie with everyday tableware and decorative pieces made of faience. Called pear jugs because of their bulbous shape, these ceramic vessels are the most famous products of the Durlach faience manufactory. They were produced from the mid-18th century until the end of production in the 1840s. The scenic decorations of these pear jugs convey everyday stories and rhymed sayings betray contemporary ways of thinking. Durlach pear jugs are cultural, social and contemporary historical evidence of the highest order. Condition of the jug is good, with some fine executed restorations at its handle and mouth region, while left with some minor chipping at its base. The detailed photos are part of the description and can be used as an accurate reference.
Dimensions: Height - 20cm, Diameter with handle - 15cm, Base diameter - 7.5cm, Weight - 639g.
