Description from the seller
Monumental crucifix with ivory corpus, mid-19th century
Large and richly crafted crucifix, consisting of an ivory Corpus Christi mounted on a wooden cross, inlaid with ivory. The corpus is fully three-dimensionally carved and shows Christ with arms raised, the head slightly tilted to the right, facial features expressive and finely worked. The anatomy is carefully modeled, with clear attention to the musculature of the chest, abdomen and legs. The loincloth (perizonium) is rendered plastically with subtle drapery.
The cross is equipped with an ivory INRI plate, a central rosette motif behind the head, and decorative ivory elements, including a skull with crossed bones (Golgotha symbol) beneath the corpus. Ivory rays are applied on both sides.
The whole rests on an elaborate architectural wooden base, inlaid with ivory and composed of curved support shapes, a chessboard-like inlay field and floral ivory appliques. At the base are small vase-shaped holders with metal floral ornaments.
The ivory shows a warm, natural patina with light signs of aging and fine drying cracks, appropriate to age and material. No major restorations visible; a few small stress lines and signs of use present.
Europe (likely the Netherlands, southern Germany / Italy), 19th century.
Materials: ivory, wood, metal.
Condition: good condition, with normal age- and material-specific signs.
Height: approx. 56 cm (overall object).
Height of corpus: 20 cm.
Comes with an expert certificate and EU CITES certificate.
Attention: only shipping within the EU.
Wordt geleverd met deskundige verklaring en EU Cites certificaat.
