AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Large outstanding disc dagger, Misericordia

1450 - Germany, Passau
Large disc dagger with typical Misericordia blade
With original hilt in good preserved condition
Smith mark in the stylistic form of the Passau Wolf

In the literature this dagger type is known in Latin as Misericordia. Translated into German as Gnadgott. With such a Misericordia, gravely wounded and near-death knights were relieved from worldly suffering on the battlefield with a targeted stab and granted God’s grace, redemption, death. Hence this very special and rare dagger received the name Gnadgott or Misericordia.

The ricasso at the base of the blade is adorned on both sides with engravings; on the obverse there are the structural lines of a coiled snake moving from left to right and abutting the deeply struck smith mark. On the reverse of the ricasso, the contours of minuscule letters can be discerned, unfortunately difficult to decipher due to age.

Slim and finely worked iron blade with distinctive ricasso and smith mark, transitioning into a diamond-shaped thrust plate.
Good preserved condition
approx. 35 cm long

The hilt has in the middle a gold-colored ring that visually resembles gold sheet and on which very fine engravings can be seen (see the detailed illustration). It clearly shows a cross as well as 2 rhombuses in the center that form the 3 letters IHS.
