Description from the seller
550° Anniversario della nascita di Michelangelo
Limited edition 0641 of 1500
Gold 999.9‰ coin
A tribute to the timeless genius of Michelangelo: from the fingers of God and Adam reaching toward one another in the masterpiece The Creation, to the portrait of the artist, and the magnificent pavement design of Piazza del Campidoglio—every detail celebrates and exalts the master of the Renaissance.
Obverse:
At the center is a portrait of Michelangelo preserved at the Casa Buonarroti Museum. In the background appears a depiction of the Michelangelesque geometric pattern that characterizes the pavement of Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome. Around the edge runs the inscription “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA.” On the right, along the rim, is the artist’s signature “U. PERNAZZA.”
Reverse:
At the center is the detail of the hands from The Creation of Adam, the fresco located inside the Sistine Chapel. Around the edge at the top appears the inscription “MICHELANGELO,” and in the field the dates “1475” and “2025,” representing the artist’s year of birth and the year of minting of the coin, respectively. Along the lower rim appears the inscription “QUESTO SOL M’ARDE E QUESTO M’INNAMORA.” At the bottom is “10 EURO,” the face value of the coin. To the left is “R,” identifying the Rome Mint.
