Description from the seller
The beautiful globe is encased in a calibrated, fully metal meridian that rotates in a meridian fork. The circular horizon band with a paper calendar and the zodiac sits on a turned mahogany stand with a central baluster on a cast, inward-curved, four-part pedestal, ending in flattened globe-shaped feet. The continents are rendered in shades of yellow, green, orange, and beige with dark outlines. The oceans are green-blue, and ocean currents are indicated with light yellow wavy lines.
The globe was made between 1927 and 1930 in Edinburgh (UK) by W. & A.K. Johnston Ltd and the stand was supplied by Kittinger Furniture Company in Buffalo (USA), one of the leading American furniture makers of the 20th century. The base is therefore of unusually high quality for a desk globe of this period and was likely intended for home use. Kittinger sold and distributed the globe as a whole, with their own label on the cartouche. At the bottom of the pedestal is the original bronze maker’s mark by Kittinger, and the globe is numbered there by the maker with chalk (number 108).
The globe is in excellent condition, with only a small portion of the map sheet missing near the Sahara. This portion has been restored. There are also a few small holes on the bottom of the globe. It is an option to consider having the globe restored by an expert. It is more than worth it.
All things considered, it is an opportunity to acquire a beautiful, very rare and iconic American antique globe. These globes are highly sought after and not easy to find.
Please study the photos carefully; they form an important part of the description.
