Bob Mizer dedicated 48 years to photography and film for his association of athletic models, and 41 years to the publication of Physique Pictorial, the first gay bodybuilding magazine in the United States. His diaries, kept since the age of eight, reveal his homosexuality openly acknowledged since the end of adolescence. Yet, until the age of 42, he lived and worked in his mother's boarding house in Los Angeles, where a strict ethic prevented him from fully expressing his fantasies. For 24 years, he worked in black and white and never photographed a man entirely naked. But after his mother's death in 1964, Mizer created a universe dedicated to the pleasures of masculine flesh, photographing men entirely naked in explicit poses and in saturated psychedelic colors.
