AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A very special and large colonial clothing trunk (wardrobe trunk) from the early 20th century, dating from the period circa 1918–1928 and used in the Dutch East Indies.

The suitcase is made of wood, covered with lacquered canvas and equipped with metal corner protectors, hinges and lock fittings. On the exterior there are original hand-painted transport markings with the name L.G. Mazure, the company acronym S.V.P.M., and the location Sungai Gerong – Palembang (South Sumatra). Additionally, on several sides there are original paper transport labels bearing the code MZ-34, likely an internal baggage or inventory code.

The interior is wholly original and functionally arranged: on the left a hanging section with a metal clothes rail; on the right a drawer system with five drawers.
All drawers are present and fitted with original leather handles. The interior lining consists of burgundy-colored paper, typical for wardrobe trunks from this period.

The suitcase shows signs of wear consistent with intensive and long intercontinental sea transport, but has not been restored and remains in its authentic condition.

This wardrobe trunk is a tangible object from colonial history and illustrates the life and work of European workers in the oil industry in the Dutch East Indies.

Dating: ca. 1918–1928

Origin: Probably used by L.G. Mazure, employed by the Standard Vacuum Petroleum Company (SVPM), stationed at Sungai Gerong near Palembang, in the former Dutch East Indies.
