Two hardcover volumes on Lega art, titled 'Art of the Lega' and 'La Sculpture Des Lega', originating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and focusing on the Lega Bwami culture, with dimensions 40 x 30 x 10 cm, weight 4.5 kg, and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
- Art of the Lega
Based on various sources, including Daniel P. Biebuyck's groundbreaking fieldwork of the 1950s, Elisabeth Cameron investigates the culture and art of the Lega peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Among the Lega, art is made only for and used by the Bwami Society. Bwami is a complex organization that consists of multiple levels, and it constitutes an essential part of the political, social, and religious structure of the Lega.
231 pages, English-language, 2001 hardcover
- The Sculpture of the Lega
Through this study, the author, Daniel P. Biebuyck, shares his extensive knowledge of the Lega, a people whose spiritual intensity shines through all their works in relation to their rites—the simplest object becoming the most valuable sculpture. To realize the value of the pieces in this book, it is necessary to return Lega art to the context of the institution that gives it its meaning and its beauty: the Bwami synthesis. We note at the outset that here we do not know how to describe the variety of Bwami rituals or the multiple variants that it had in the expansive region occupied by the Lega. The information available in this introduction mainly concerns the Lega in the south and southwest of Zaire, where the Bwami had reached its greatest development before it was banned by the colonial authorities. Rare book
