Description from the seller
A Stunning Ancient Roman Hyena Statue 1-3 AD
Top Patina.
This is a very early piece.
The relationship between hyenas and Romans was one of fascination, fear, and entertainment. Although hyenas didn't exist in the wild in the heart of the Roman Empire, the Romans were familiar with them as exotic animals from Africa and the Middle East.
Gladiatorial Games (Venatio): The Romans brought hyenas from Africa and used them in venationes (wild animal hunts) in amphitheaters like the Colosseum. They were seen as spectacular, dangerous "beasts" used to fight gladiators or to execute convicts.

Width: 18.9 mm
