Originally, the mask, called 'grè' in Bété, is a traditional entity originating from the mountainous west. The 'glè' comes from the word 'gla' of the Guere ethnicity. It has undergone transformations throughout its history.
Bété masks are generally worn during joyful or sorrowful occasions.
Since there are no specific traditional festivals, masks are used during celebratory ceremonies.
Bété African masks also appear during days of large gatherings, especially during community march days.
