Published in 2017, Nyūbō no Aru Jōkei is a photobook by Japanese photographer Ryōsuke Handa (Banda Ryōsuke as written in Japanese). The core idea is a series of images that use a mirror to capture the same breast from both the front and the side within a single composition.
The approach is inspired by the pose found in classical painting—often with the body turned slightly sideways—such as Giorgione’s Sleeping Venus. In these photographs, one breast is shown more frontally while the other is seen in profile. The side view brings out a clear contour, while the frontal reflection appears softer, creating a quiet movement for the viewer’s eye.
Each photograph is accompanied by Japanese text printed alongside the image, adding an extra layer of atmosphere. Handa is also known as a fashion photographer, and that sensibility is evident in the controlled framing and careful handling of light.
