French linen tablecloth from the mid‑20th century (ca. 1935–1950), measuring 226 cm by 155 cm, white linen with a multicolour machine‑embroidered floral garland, in good condition.
Description from the seller
This elegant French linen tablecloth dates from the mid-20th century, circa 1935–1950, a period when high-quality household linens were still produced using natural fibres and skilled embroidery workshops.
Woven from fine white linen, the fabric has a soft, fluid drape and a matte surface typical of linen intended for formal dining and special occasions rather than everyday use. The generous size — approximately 226 cm long × 155 cm wide — indicates it was made for a substantial dining table, a format that is increasingly uncommon today.
The tablecloth is decorated with a machine-embroidered floral garland, arranged in a balanced oval composition at the centre. The design features poppies, daisies, and stylised wheat, motifs strongly associated with French rural symbolism, evoking harvest, abundance, and the countryside. The restrained colour palette — muted red, soft blue, olive green, and warm straw yellow — is characteristic of French decorative taste of the interwar and early post-war years.
The embroidery is finely executed, with dense, even stitching and clean, continuous lines, reflecting the work of professional embroidery ateliers using early mechanical embroidery techniques. This method allowed for precision and symmetry while retaining a hand-finished aesthetic typical of quality French domestic textiles of the period.
Tablecloths of this type were often produced for trousseaux or special-occasion dining, carefully stored and brought out for family gatherings and celebrations. Today, it stands as a refined and timeless example of mid-20th-century French textile craftsmanship, equally suited to a classic interior or a contemporary setting.
⸻
CONDITION
Very good vintage condition. The linen remains strong and supple, and the embroidery is well preserved. There are two small, faint age-related marks visible on close inspection (shown in the photographs), along with a few scattered tiny pinhead-sized dark specks, consistent with age and storage. No tears, no repairs, and no significant damage.
