Monumental bronze ashtray, 33 × 30.5 × 6.5 cm, 14 kg, signed MUAKU95 and dated 1995, from Congo, Africa; fusion of European Brutalist aesthetics with contemporary African design; good condition with age-related wear.
Description from the seller
Exceptional and monumental bronze ashtray weighing 14 kilos, signed Muaku95. A magistral fusion, a work of art casting, blending European Brutalist aesthetics and the power of contemporary African design. African metallurgical craftsmanship
A rare collectible piece as much for its design as for its outsized weight of 14 kg. Dated 1995 and signed 'MUAKU', this unique piece stands out with its extraordinary presence (33 cm for 14 kg). The exterior features a rough 'bark' texture with a greenish patina, while the basin, with thick walls, houses the ash in an organic and protective form.
This exceptional 14-kilogram piece is a work of contemporary African metal casting. It testifies to the mastery of bronze work in Africa, reinterpreted here in a powerful and modern sculptural style.
The bottom of the bowl shows slight authentic usage marks, cigars' marks that once inhabited the piece. Far from being defects, these time stains confer on the bronze a patina of soul and historical charm, bearing witness to its history and primary function, probably within a prestige lounge."
