Antique drop-front oak secretaire desk in a Jacobean Revival-inspired design, dating to the first half of the 20th century; oak material, in good used condition, dimensions H 90 cm x W 91 cm x D 45 cm.
Description from the seller
An antique carved oak drop-front desk or bureau, probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
The piece of furniture is a secretary desk, also commonly known as a desk, with a hinged slanted front that folds down to create a writing surface.
Materials and finish: The desk is made of dark-finished oak, a commonly used material for this style and period.
Wood carving: The most striking are the intricate relief engravings on the panels of the two large drawers beneath the desk section, on the stiles (vertical supports) at the corners and along the lower edge. These flower- or scroll-like engravings are indicative of the Jacobean Revival style.
Legs: It stands on distinctive turned legs, consistent with the Jacobean style.
Hardware: The drawers are fitted with round brass handles and keyhole rosettes. The drop-front also has a central keyhole and brass hardware along the top edge.
Potential origin/period: The heavy carving and the use of oak suggest an English or French provincial origin, probably produced during a revival of earlier styles (Jacobean or Louis XVI Country French) in the late 19th century to early 20th century.
Dimensions: height 90 cm, width 91 cm, and depth 45 cm
In good condition with signs of use.
