Description from the seller
Bronze candlestick – Saint Christopher bearing the Child Jesus – Flanders, 19th century
Rare bronze candlestick depicting Saint Christopher carrying the Infant Jesus on his shoulder. The saint is shown walking, eyes closed, holding the staff (now partially incomplete on the upper part) which ended in a small cup-shaped receptacle intended to receive the candle. The Infant, blessing, rests on the saint’s left shoulder. The whole rests on a wide circular base with a strong rim.
This typology belongs to a well-defined corpus, derived from the Mannleinleuchter produced from the end of the 15th century in the former Netherlands. These are the “figural candlesticks” where the figure itself forms the shaft.
An identical copy, dated circa 1600–1630, is housed at Stoneacre (Kent, United Kingdom), inv. NT 863878, confirming the formal lineage of this model with early Nordic productions.
Solid cast, beautiful antique patina, brown-gold, with wear and oxidation that is coherent.
Old defect at the level of the upper binet. Signs of wear inside the bobeche and on the plate, consistent with use.
Photos are an integral part of the object's description and complement its presentation. They allow you to assess its condition and features. Please examine them carefully before making any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
Happy bidding!
