Description from the seller
Blackened wooden crucifix and Christ in silver – Symbolism of the Defeated Serpent – 19th century
Turned, blackened wooden table crucifix, resting on a moulded baluster base, surmounted by a spherical knob adorned with a coiled serpent carved in relief.
The cross, austere and cylindrical, bears a figure of the crucified Christ in silver, finely wrought. The titulus INRI is also in silver, applied.
The Christ presents expressive anatomy, with a tense, nervous modeling, featuring a strong emphasis on the musculature and the perizonium tied at the hip.
Good quality workmanship, presumably cast and then chiseled and refinished on the surface.
The striking iconographic element is the presence of a serpent coiled around the central globe, placed beneath the Cross.
This depiction explicitly refers to the theology of Christ triumphant over sin and Satan.
The serpent, a symbol of evil, is here dominated by the vertical axis of the Cross, affirming the redeeming victory.
Beautiful old patina on the darkened wood, normal wear. The silver shows a light patina, with no visible structural alterations.
Photos are an integral part of the object's description and complement its presentation. They allow you to assess its condition and features. Please examine them carefully before making any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
Happy bidding!
