Nero was a Roman emperor from 54 to 68 AD. The last of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, he is known for his controversial rule, marked by luxury, excesses, and repression. During his reign, the great fire of Rome occurred in 64 AD, for which he was accused, although his responsibility remains uncertain. He loved the arts and performed in public, which was frowned upon at the time. He died by suicide after being declared a public enemy by the Senate.
