Rome [First edition; inscribed], a French-language first edition from 1959 of William Klein's photography book, Le Seuil, hardcover with dust jacket, 190 pages, signed on the initial page, measuring 28.5 × 22.5 cm.
Description from the seller
Rarest signed and inscribed copy on the frontispiece by William Klein (1926 - 2022). A very great book referenced in Parr & Badger, Auer Photobooks page 388, The Open Book - Hasselblad Center edited by Andrew Roth page 178 in a very beautiful copy of the original edition. 190 pages and nearly 150 black-and-white photographs including many double-page photographs, texts in French by William Klein with comments on the photographs, very beautiful black-tooled binding with the title impressed in relief in white lettering and illustrated dust jacket.
In 1956 William Klein arrived in Italy after the publication of “New York” and he decided to photograph the city, deploying the visual language and the photographic writing that are his own. William Klein stated that he hated the city of New York but he greatly loved Rome as he writes in the dedication: "Rome, Sweet Rome." He draws a vast collective portrait and makes a book whose layout is extremely dynamic and which, like the previous one, was first published by Seuil in a series titled “Album Petite Planète” directed by Chris and then in Italy and the United States in the same year.
William Klein detested New York and his first book was somewhat aggressive. By contrast, he loved Rome (Rome Sweet Rome) and his photographs are full of empathy for the population.
This book was published 60 years ago and this copy is in excellent condition for the body of the work and its impeccable cloth binding and dust jacket, which is complete, showing only minimal signs of wear as well as a small tear on the back (see photo).
