Description from the seller

Hispano-Colonial silver crucifix made in Upper Peru during the 18th century. This piece is an exceptional example of the mestizo Baroque style, where European iconography was reinterpreted under Indigenous artistic sensibility, thus incorporating its own aesthetics.

The design it presents with engraved leaves is typical of pieces from Potosí or Chuquisaca. On the head the typical rays of light have been replaced by leaves, as well as the ends of the cross are decorated with dots, suns and vegetal motifs. These devotional crucifixes were elements of spiritual protection.

Due to its age it lacks contrast marks, therefore an acid test was performed on the testing stone, yielding a positive result for silver.

Era: 18th Century
Country of origin: Peru
Dimensions: 10x6 cm
Weight: 30 grams

Acquired at a Dutch auction house.

The piece will be shipped protected and with tracking code.
