Description from the seller

This object concerns a finely carved ivory devotional figurine depicting the Virgin Mary in prayer. Mary is depicted standing with hands folded, head slightly bowed, and a serene, restrained facial expression. She wears a long flowing garment with carefully worked drapery; along the left side hangs a rosary, an important attribute within Marian devotion.

The figure stands on a small, integral base with stylized clouds and symbolic motifs, subtly elaborated. The carving is refined yet sober, with a clear emphasis on devotional calm and harmony. The ivory shows a light, even patina with a gentle sheen, suited to age and long-standing veneration.
The rear and bottom are smoothly finished; the compact form and size indicate use as a domestic devotional image or personal prayer object.

Material and technique
Material: ivory (likely elephant ivory)
Technique: hand-carved from a single piece
Finish: polished, with natural aging
Function: private devotion / home altar
The quality points to artisanal craftsmanship, not to modern mass production.

Dating
Late 19th century (ca. 1880) France

Indications:
Devotional Marian depiction with rosary, popular in this period
Calm, stylized form with limited Baroque elements
Frequent use of ivory for small devotional images in Catholic Europe around 1900

Comes with expert certification and EU CITES certificate.
