MG A, model type A, built in 1959.
Description from the seller
MG A Roadster – 1600 engine, 5-speed gearbox
General
“MG A, A Class Of Its Own.” The MG A is the quintessential example of the classic British sports car: affordable, light, elegant, and a joy to drive. Not for nothing was this one of the best-selling British sports cars of its time.
This left-hand-drive example began its life in 1959 as a 1500 in the favorable climate of the state of Washington (USA). In 2002 the car was shipped to the Netherlands, where it has been extensively restored and upgraded to 1600 specification. From 2002 to 2026 the MG has been owned by a single family and is now offered to the next enthusiast.
Bodywork & Paint Shop
The MG presents itself in a stunning and rare color combination: deep black paintwork paired with a red faux-leather interior. In 2002 the bodywork was professionally repainted. In February 2026 the car was professionally polished, giving the paintwork a beautiful shine once again.
Over the years, there are light to moderate signs of use (see close-up photos), appropriate for a classic car that has also been driven. The bodywork is furthermore in good and original condition. The chrome trim and the rubber seals are in reasonable condition.
The car has been enhanced with chrome spoke wheels, a chrome luggage rack, and Lucas headlamps on the front. Additionally, a badge bar is mounted in front of the grille and an external mirror on the windscreen. The black canvas soft top shows normal signs of use, and there is also a black faux leather tonneau cover. The MG comes with adjustable side windows, wind deflectors, and a spare wheel. The front and rear lighting was renewed in 2002 and is still in good condition.
INTERIOR:
The red skai-leather interior has been restored in 2002 and is still in good condition. The upholstery is free of cracks or notable damage.
The equipment is relatively complete for a classic roadster and includes, among other things, a center armrest, heating, and a Ten Auto radio with an external antenna and a dashboard speaker. In the luggage compartment there are the spare wheel, a jack and tools.
TECHNICAL:
During the restoration, the car was fitted with a rebuilt 1600 engine (1588 cc), equipped with twin SU carburetors and separate stainless-steel K&N air filters. The engine bay is neat and well-kept.
In 2005 the MG was equipped with a modern five-speed gearbox. This reduces engine RPM at cruising speed, lowers fuel consumption, and provides a more comfortable driving experience. As a result, this MGA is exceptionally well suited for longer trips and vacations—the best of both worlds.
The driveline has been adjusted and renewed during the restoration. The chrome spoke wheels are fitted with Vredestein Classic Sprint tires with sufficient tread. The car drives and shifts well.
Because the car has been driven little in recent years, a service check for the new season and replacement of the rear brake calipers is recommended, so that you can once again drive many miles with peace of mind.
DOCUMENTATION:
Invoices for the restoration, including the paintwork (2002) and the engine overhaul (2005), are available. In addition, appraisal reports and various other invoices are available. At the most recent appraisal in 2020, the MG was appraised at €29,500.
OTHER INFORMATION:
A particularly neat and tastefully assembled MG A Roadster with a powerful 1600 engine and a comfortable 5-speed transmission. An ideal classic for both relaxed cruises and longer journeys, with a beautiful history and long-standing family ownership.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
