Description from the seller
A surprising and interesting handwritten letter dated February 19, 1889, signed by Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann (1809-1891)
Miss,
I see your name on the program for a concert at the Grand Hôtel, and I regret that I cannot attend.
This name belongs to a very large family in France and Germany, of which I am the head, and which I believed I knew in its various branches.
I care to know whether anyone has affiliations of which I am unaware, or if, impossible as it may be, another family has the right to bear the name on which I am based, according to the historical documents gathered in the German archives, to believe that they belong to the origin of the one I represent, and to be the property
exclusive to the people who are descendants of it.
I would therefore be very interested to know what degree of kinship—whether close or distant—might exist between us, and if none does, by what peculiarity I have unknown homonyms.
I thank you in advance for any communications you may see fit to send me on this matter.
Please accept, Miss, the assurances of my highest consideration.
Baron Haussmann
The baron no longer holds an official position as of this date, but he appears to be very concerned with 'protecting' the family name that is his, the family of which he is 'the head'...
Letter on paper sized 25.2 cm by 20.03 cm, folded in half
Very good overall condition, slight traces of gummed hinges on the back, original creases
Careful packing in a rigid cardboard envelope with tracking
