Antique heavy desk inkstand dating to 1890–1919, crafted from wood and brass in France, featuring an eclectic style with Secession and early industrial influences, and measuring 17 cm high, 13 cm wide and 14 cm deep, in good condition with signs of age and wear.
Description from the seller
The item up for auction is an exceptionally striking, heavy desk inkstand made of metal (likely brass). The piece features a raw, “riveted” design that is counterpoint to an elegant bas-relief of a horse’s head within a horseshoe and equestrian motifs (riding crop, bugle).
Theme: A classic image of a horse’s head set within a horseshoe.
Construction: The body is adorned with dense texture imitating riveting.
Functionality: Opening top lid with a decorative handle; at the front there is a trough that can serve as a pen rest.
Style: Eclectic, with clear Art Nouveau influences (the shape of the side handles) and early industrialism.
Condition (Flaws):
The item shows clear signs of time, which give it an authentic character, but please carefully review the following points:
Dents and deformations: The metal casing has numerous dents, especially visible on the side walls and edges (visible waviness of the sheet metal).
Patina marks: A natural patina is visible across the entire surface, with discolorations especially inside the container and in the crevices.
Irregularity of form: Due to age and the softness of the material, the form is not perfectly symmetrical, and the lower edges of the base show signs of straightening or bending.
Interior: The ink container requires cleaning of dried residues.
Dimensions: (Here it would be worth adding the measurements if you know them).
This is an authentic item with a soul that will make a wonderful ornament for a desk or a small library.
