Description from the seller
Year: 2025
Quality: Proof
Series: Heritage of the Grimaldi family
Special features: Barony of Carladès
Designer(s): Joaquin Jimenez
Located on the southern slope of the Cantal mountains, the current territory of Carladès is divided by the four valleys of Cère, Brezons, Goul and Bromme. While the height and climate of the two northern valleys form a typical mountainous area, the two southern valleys are characterized in their lower portions by a more Mediterranean landscape.
In 1510, during the compilation of the customs of Auvergne, Suzanne de Bourbon, as countess of Carlat, claimed that Carladès had its own rights and customs, separate from those of the former County of Auvergne, to which it had never belonged. After a period of peace, the religious wars were particularly fierce in the region. Just as during the Hundred Years' War, roving bands, consisting of both Catholics and Protestants, attacked castles that served as bases for plundering the countryside before returning the loot for ransom. They also targeted towns and abbeys.
In 1643, Louis XIII elevated the Barony of Carlat, after removing the Barony of Murat, to the County of Carladès. By the Treaty of Peronne, he granted it, along with other territories, to Honoré II Grimaldi (1623-1651) as thanks for his alliance and as compensation for the loss of his lordships in Spain.
The current Prince of Monaco, Albert II, is the owner of Château de Carlat, which was repurchased by his great-grandfather, Prince Albert I, through the Société de la Haute-Auvergne. The title of Count of Carladès, now a Monégasque noble title, was conferred by his father on Princess Gabriella of Monaco, who at birth became Countess of Carladès.
In the center of the coin is an image of the castle of the Princes of Monaco at Vic-sur-Cère (Cantal) in the viscounty of Carladès. At the top of the image is the issuing country, 'MONACO', depicted on a diamond-shaped shield (left) and to the right the lion with leopard head, the heraldic creature of Carladès. At the bottom of the image is the reason for issue, 'COMTÉ DE CARLADÈS', and to the right the year of issue, 2025, with the mint marks of Monnaie de Paris (Horn of Plenty) and the coat of arms of the Chief Engraver, Joaquin Jiménez. Along the outer edge of the coin are the twelve stars of the European flag.
