Description from the seller
Antique Dutch 18th-century slant-front desk with a richly furnished interior, including a small cellar and secret compartments
Offered from a distinctive private collection: an authentic Dutch slant-front desk (belly cabinet) from the 18th century.
This desk comes from the parental home of the current owner. The parents were lifelong antique dealers, and this desk was a cherished part of their personal interior, occupying a prominent place in the living room for decades.
Interior & Secrets:
The piece features a beautifully worked-out "nest" (interior). In addition to the various drawers and post slots, it includes a central cabinet door and a clever little cellar, accessible via a sliding panel. The construction also contains several hidden compartments, characteristic of the high craftsmanship of the 18th century.
Condition:
The desk is in an honest, authentic state with a wonderful deep patina. As expected for a piece of this age, there are signs of use and aging:
• There are a few small gaps/damage in the wood of the lid and around the hardware visible (see detail photos).
• The back panel shows natural movement/cracking in the wood.
• There are currently no keys present.
• The copper hardware is very detailed and gracefully executed.
Specifications:
• Period: 19th century
• Style: Dutch Baroque / Louis XV
• Material: Oak wood
• Dimensions: 106 cm high, 105 cm wide, 58 cm deep
Delivery:
Due to the size and fragility, collection only or delivery via Brenger.
