AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Rare Delft tile "Grand Format" - Wildlife subject: Elephant - 17th century - Wanli border
Detailed description:
Exceptional and rare Delft faience tile in blue and white dating from the first half of the 17th century. The central scene depicts an elephant, an exotic subject highly sought after by Dutch tile collectors. At that time, the animal was often drawn in a stylized manner or after travelers' accounts, which gives this piece a unique archaic charm [1.1, 15.1].
The motif is framed in an octagonal medallion adorned with a Wanli-style border (in reference to Ming-era Chinese porcelains) with acanthus decorations. The four corners are decorated with the classic motif known as the "bull head" (or spider).
Technical assessment:
The back and edges confirm an old artisanal manufacture:

- Earthenware: Thick (≈ 10 mm), cream-pink color, characteristic of 17th-century Frisian clay
- Edges: Presence of glaze runs and traces of original mortar, guaranteeing a piece that has come straight from the wall and with no restoration
- Size: Rare dimensions of 14 x 14 cm, typical of early productions (c. 1620-1650).

Era: 17th century (c. 1620-1650).
Origin: Netherlands (Delft or Haarlem).
Dimensions:
- Format: 14 x 14 cm
- Thickness: ≈ 10 mm
