AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Exceptionally signed copy on the title page by Mimmo Jodice (1934 - 2025), unique and unobtainable in a signed copy. 120 pages and more than 50 black-and-white photographs full-page, texts in Italian and English by art critic and historian Germano Celant. Soft cover illustrated with wide flaps. In excellent condition.

"This lush garden inhabited by all kinds of objects and products that feed life can transform, if observed in detail, into Lost Eden, a territory of a terrifying dimension of the banal. The images by Mimmo Jodice capture moments of stillness and paralysis of life, revealing the hidden and dark side of modernity." (according to Germano Celant).

"Photographs of food, televisions, telephones, plants, computers, mannequins, motorcycles, clothing, cars, tools, and much more. An intrusive and insistent gaze on the objects we consume and that consume us on a daily basis. Items seemingly familiar or banal, harmless and motionless, transform into a living and alienating material, endowed with a strong aggressiveness. Eden is a metaphor of daily violence, this persuasive and pervasive violence induced by our ephemeral needs. Eden is a perverse ritual, a paradise and hell of our most ferocious desires, and simultaneously the mirror of the darkest and most hidden part of our consciousness. Mimmo Jodice revisits the classic still life theme by photographing unusual compositions, often captured on the street or in display cases" (from the back-cover text).

Mimmo Jodice is one of the greatest Italian photographers of the 20th century and has achieved international recognition around the world. Self-taught photographer born in 1934 in Naples, he began his artistic activity in the mid-1960s with visual experimentation and created research in cut-outs and collages of images, then in the 1970s moved toward social denunciation related to the miserable living conditions of Naples’ population, a vibrant and popular city, and in the 1980s toward an evocative silence of the metaphysical landscape and Mediterranean archaeology, with a creative language that reflects on time, light, and the very act of seeing. In 1983-1984 Mimmo Jodice also participated in the project “Viaggio in Italia” with Luigi Ghirri and about ten other emerging Italian photographers of the time such as Guido Guidi, Mario Cresci, Olivo Barbieri, Vittore Fossati. Mimmo Jodice has presented his work in France on several occasions, notably within the Arles International Photography Meetings as well as in a retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2010 which led to the publication of an important catalog.

A book from my personal collection, in excellent condition, nearly like new, kept with the greatest care. Shipping protected very effectively and international tracking guaranteed.
