Description from the seller
Medieval reliquary cross / capsule cross made of bronze – two-part construction – approx. 10th–12th century
⸻
• Object type: reliquary cross / capsule cross (two-part)
• Dating: presumably High Middle Ages, approx. 10th–12th century
• Material: bronze / copper alloy
• Technique: cast, two-part work, with hinge or plug connection
• Construction: two cross halves, internally hollow
• Suspension: upper eyelet/attachment preserved
• Condition: excavation-find condition with pronounced patina; signs of corrosion; hinge/plug connection damaged; age-related material losses
• Conservation: uncleaned, original surface with grown patina
⸻
Rare medieval reliquary cross in bronze, produced in a two-part construction. The cross consists of two hollowed halves that were originally connected via a hinge or plug construction and provided space inside for a small relic. The robust, austere form language and the massive execution point to a creation in the High Middle Ages, presumably between the 10th and 12th centuries.
The surface shows an authentic, organically grown green-brown patina with age-related corrosion traces, underscoring its archaeological character. Despite damage to the connection, the original construction remains clearly traceable.
A collectible object for enthusiasts of medieval sacred art and early Christian devotional items.
