Rouen - Tureen - Earthenware - 'Cul noire' hare tureen

This auction is for a rare 18th century tureen and lid in the form of a hare (lievre). It is made from red clay and a heavy black glaze. Described by the french as 'cul noire' glaze, it was manufactured in Rouen in the late 18th century. The decoration is naïve and typical of the early 1700s in France. As visible on the photographs there are losses, including the top handle, and edges of the base. There are no cracks. The inside white glaze has crackled with age, giving it a lovely old patination. This tureen is nearly 300 years old, s some loss can be expected.

It measures 42cm long, and is very heavy.
