Description from the seller
Lot:
Beautiful ammonite plate with multiple Dactylioceras from the Posidonia Shale (Lias epsilon)
Location: Dotternhausen, Germany
Geological era: Early Jurassic (Toarcian), ca. 180–175 million years old
Formation: Posidonienschiefer (Lias epsilon / Ölschiefer), classic bituminous slate with exceptional preservation
Description:
Nicely prepared fossil plate featuring diverse ammonites of the genus *Dactylioceras* (likely *Dactylioceras commune* and/or related species). The ammonites display the characteristic fine, radial ribs and are partly pyritized gilded / bronze-colored impregnated, creating a beautiful contrast against the pitch-black slate matrix.
On the plate are clearly visible:
- A large central ammonite (ca. 8–10 cm diameter) with complete whorls and richly detailed sculpture
- Several smaller specimens (ca. 3–6 cm) scattered across the plate, including partial impressions and cross-sections
- Subtle traces of organic remains and typical mass extinction-layer impression
The plate is professionally prepared, with a natural, irregular edge and an attractive composition – ideal as a decorative piece or for a collection.
Plate dimensions: 22 × 18 cm (height × width)
Thickness: ca. 1–2 cm (typical for these plates)
Condition: Very good – no major fractures, slight natural hairline cracks in the matrix (normal for Posidonia slate), ammonites sharp and intact
Origin: Classic German locality, legally mined and exported.
Beautiful piece for both beginner and advanced collectors of Jura ammonites. An iconic fossil from one of the world’s most famous lagerstätten!
