Antique duigenton/karnton, a solid wood churn with copper hoops, dating to 1900–1910, Netherlands; dimensions 55.5 × 27 × 31 cm, weight 7.8 kg.
Description from the seller
This old-fashioned wooden hogshead with copper hoops originally served as a churn barrel for making butter.
The barrel is craft-built from solid wooden staves and reinforced with several copper bands that are affixed with rivets. The wide copper top rim and the warm wood tone give the object a characterful appearance with a lovely natural patina.
Such barrels were used in the countryside to churn cream by hand into butter – an essential part of the agricultural household. Because of its sturdy construction and relatively heavy weight, this is a solid and authentic item from the dairy tradition.
Today the piece is especially decorative and suitable as:
- Country-style interior object
- Umbrella stand
- Wine or champagne cooler
- Collectible within agricultural heritage
Symbolic meaning
The churn barrel symbolizes self-sufficiency, home crafts, and artisanal food production. The object reflects a time when butter production was part of daily farming life.
Condition
Good antique state with signs of use appropriate to age and original use.
Copper with natural patina and slight oxidation
A few small dents on the top rim
Two small fastening nails/rivets are missing from the copper top band (see detail photos)
Wood with normal wear and light scratches
Constructing further solid and stable
Dimensions:
