At the beginning of the 1990s, the DTM was in crisis. The new FIA regulations drove away Audi as well as BMW and made the cars very expensive. The Super Tourenwagen Cup (STW) championship began in 1994 under the regulations of Super Tourisme, which were already winning followers in France or the United Kingdom. Many manufacturers then entered STW more or less officially. In 1997, the DTM no longer exists and only the STW is contested in Germany. Third in 1996, a certain Laurent Aïello shone with the Peugeot 406 on the other side of the Rhine. In 1997, the Frenchman followed up with victories and clinched the title ahead of the German Joachim Winkelhock and his BMW. This would be the only French success in the short history of the Super Tourenwagen Cup (STW). It would come to an end with the 1999 season.
