AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Exceptional copy exceptionally dedicated and signed on the title page by Mimmo Jodice (1934 - 2025), unique and unavailable in signed copy and almost unavailable in unsigned copy. 316 pages and about 200 color photographs printed full page and for some double-page, texts in Italian with editorial coordination by Fausto Zevi. Black cloth binding with title imprinted in relief on the back in white characters. Illustrated dust jacket and sturdy illustrated case identical to the jacket. In very good condition, close to new.

Away from the usual crowds of tourists, Mimmo Jodice shares with us the beauty of the Paestum archaeological site, located near Salerno. Moving constantly across the field in search of the best viewpoints, he multiplies the perspectives. This archaeological site was discovered by travelers in the 18th century and later Goethe celebrated there one of the most perfect examples of architectural classicism. This site, one of the vastest in Southern Italy, comprises three Doric temples and its orthogonal urban layout dates essentially from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Mimmo Jodice is one of the greatest Italian photographers of the 20th century and has gained international recognition around the world. A self-taught photographer born in 1934 in Naples, he began his artistic activity in the mid-1960s with visual experimentation and produced works of cutting and collaging images, then in the 1970s moved toward social denunciation related to the miserable living conditions of the population of the city of Naples, lively and popular, and in the 1980s toward a evocative silence of the metaphysical landscape and Mediterranean archaeology, with a creative language that reflects on time, light and the act of seeing itself. In 1983-1984 Mimmo Jodice also participated in the project “Viaggio in Italia” with Luigi Ghirri and about a dozen other Italian photographers emerging at the time such as Guido Guidi, Mario Cresci, Olivo Barbieri, Vittore Fossati. Mimmo Jodice has presented his work in France on several occasions, notably within the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles as well as during a retrospective at the Maison européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2010 which led to the publication of an important catalogue.
