Victorian antique gentleman’s walking cane, c.1900–1910, with a heavy hardwood shaft and a silver-coloured metal oval knob handle featuring floral relief and a scalloped rim.
Description from the seller
Gentleman’s walking cane featuring a heavy, ornately decorated oval metal knob handle, mounted on a notably heavy hardwood shaft. The handle has an oval cross-section rather than a circular form, providing a comfortable grip and reflecting a design choice often seen in late 19th to early 20th century decorative cane production.
The handle is richly worked with floral and foliate relief decoration, finished with a scalloped rim and domed top. No hallmarks or metal purity stamps are visible. The surface appearance and areas of wear may suggest that the handle was originally silver-plated, with the silver layer having worn through over time. For this reason, the handle is described as silver-coloured metal, rather than solid silver. The handle has substantial weight and presence, contributing to the overall balance of the cane.
The heavy hardwood shaft gives the cane a solid feel in hand and good structural stability. The wood shows a deep brown tone with visible grain and natural patina consistent with age. The cane is fitted with a black rubber ferrule at the base, serving a protective function and considered a later addition.
Overall, this is a well-made and visually strong example of a late Victorian / early Edwardian gentleman’s walking cane, valued for its construction quality, weight and decorative handle rather than confirmed precious metal content.
Good condition, consistent with age. The metal handle shows surface wear, rubbing, small dents and patina from age and use. The hardwood shaft is straight, solid and heavy, with minor surface wear. The rubber ferrule is later and functional. No cracks or structural damage observed.
