Figure - Congo

Beautifully carved statue of the Bembe. (DC Congo). It depicts a mother protecting and embracing a child.
She is dressed in a long gown. The portrayal is somewhat exceptional and shows Western features largely through the clothing. However, it is clearly the work of a skilled woodcarver who honors the iconography of the Bembe but gives his own interpretation to the portrayal.
