Description from the seller
British India – Queen Victoria – One Rupee – 1879
Silver (.917)
Weight: approx. 11.61 g
Authentic British India silver Rupee issued under Queen Victoria, Empress of India.
This coin is particularly attractive for its preservation. For a circulation coin from 1879, the details remain impressively clear. The portrait of Queen Victoria is well-defined, with visible facial features, crown details and decorative elements in the hair and clothing. The reverse floral design is sharp and elegant, with strong lettering and well-preserved ornamental patterns. Overall, a very well-kept example for its age.
Queen Victoria became Empress of India in 1876, marking a major turning point in British colonial history. It is historically significant that one of the most powerful empires of the 19th century was ruled by a woman.
Obverse: Crowned bust of Queen Victoria facing left with legend “VICTORIA EMPRESS”.
Reverse: Ornate floral wreath design with “ONE RUPEE INDIA 1879”.
Struck in high silver purity (.917), this rupee represents the classic Victorian colonial silver coinage.
A beautiful and historically important silver coin from the height of the British Empire.
