Black opals, like their differently colored counterparts, occur as a globular to nodular mass without detectable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only when this is cut. Characteristic for this form of opals is their opalescence, which shines with intense rainbow iridescence. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it its name.

Black opals arise, just like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic sheen is attributable to water inclusions inside this mineral.
