Antique Travel Camera Room – Louis Van Neck, Antwerp
Around 1885–1905
Rare folding travel photographic camera attributed to Louis Van Neck, photographer and builder active in Antwerp at the end of the 19th century.
Wooden burl walnut, varnished, folding chamber equipped with an original leather bellows in burgundy said “oxblood,” characteristic of productions from this period.
The instrument is fitted with its fast rectilinear lens (Rapid Rectilinear), signed “Louis Van Neck – Antwerp, Klapdorp 10,” address engraved on the lens.
Presence of the original lens cap, in black leather, as well as an integrated and functional vintage spirit level.

Rapid Rectilinear lens: signature and address legible.
Bubble level: present and functional.
Dépoli: intact, with no cracks or breaks.
Remarks:
Manufacturer’s plate missing (trace evidence visible).
The whole item has not been modified, modernized or reassembled:
It is a homogeneous object, as it could have been used by a traveling photographer around 1885–1905.
This type of instrument perfectly illustrates the transition between plate photography and the beginnings of modern photography, at a time when portability became a major concern.
A historically, aesthetically and technically valuable object, sought after by collectors of early photography, museums and enthusiasts of large-format cameras.

Louis Van Neck was a photographer and craftsman based in Antwerp, active during a pivotal period in the history of photography.
He notably carried out shoots for the city of Antwerp and participated in the dissemination of professional photographic practices.
He also showed an interest in the earliest forms of cinema and moving images in Belgium, at the turn of the 20th century.
