Russian icon of Saint Nicholas with a silver oklad and gilding, stamped – Moscow, 1883
Small portable icon representing Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, blessing with the right hand and holding the Gospel open with the left. The painting is done in tempera on wood, protected by an oklad (cover) in repoussé and chased silver, with a pierced gilded halo.
In the upper corners are depicted Christ blessing and the Mother of God, holding the Gospel and the omophorion, in accordance with traditional iconography.
The silver cover bears several legible hallmarks on the lower edge:
• “84”: Russian standard guaranteeing silver at 875/1000, in use in the Russian Empire.
• City mark: Moscow (Saint George slaying the dragon, visible).
• Date letter: 1883.
• Assay master’s mark: “А.С.” (A.S.), probably identified with a Moscow goldsmith active in the late 19th century.
• Assay mark: applied by the assay office, confirming authenticity and silver content.
Refined workmanship, with a decorative engraving of geometric and floral motifs. The gilded halo in openwork highlights the figure of Saint Nicholas, giving a beautiful luminous presence.
