Description from the seller
In this listing, an elegant pendulum clock case (longcase) from the Italian or Central European area, dating from the late 1800s. The piece is made of walnut, with a splendid flame grain on the lower part and on the base.
This case is perfect for a restoration project or to be converted into a high-quality Curio Cabinet thanks to its clean lines and large glazed section.
Analysis and Construction Details:
Cap: Temple pediment with a refined dentil frame typical of late 19th-century cabinetry.
Body: Full-height single door with original brass hinges. The glass is antique and shows the characteristic waviness and air bubbles of the period.
Base: Solid plinth decorated with an etched acanthus leaf-style frame that visually separates the base from the upper body.
Back: In solid wood, features the original holes for mounting the mechanism mounting bracket (previously removed).
Condition Report:
The piece is structurally sound and shows no active signs of woodworm. However, being an antique item, it shows signs of age:
Cap: A noticeable defect in the upper left corner (missing a portion of the frame, as documented in the photos).
Finish: The original polish is slightly faded in some spots; a gommalacca (shellac) or wax refresh would enhance the warm walnut color.
Mechanism: ABSENT. The item is sold only as the wooden case for furniture use or as a restoration base.
Base: Shows small scratches and wear marks appropriate to age on the lower part (toe kick).
Technical Specifications
Material: Walnut wood and fir (for the back).
Period: circa 1880-1900.
Conditions: To restore / Good with signs of use.
