Moba ancestor figure from Togo, wood, early 20th century, height 84 cm, in good condition, provenance private collection.
Description from the seller
These Moba ancestral figures. These sculptures, called the 'African aliens' due to their peculiar carving, symbolize the aura of the ancestor, without identifying features, as the tribe's initiates define the image of the apparitions. Raised in burial fields, some facing one another seem to establish a new society of 'ghosts'. On the other hand, the contemporary view of these sculptures provides us with a modern, avant-garde simplicity of execution worthy of study.
Height: 84 cm.
