Ancient Greek silver drachm in the name of Alexander III the Great, a posthumous issue, circa 310–301 BC, with a diameter of 1.6 cm and weight of 4.1 g, in very good condition, acquired in 2000 from a private collection.
Description from the seller
A very fine Ancient Greek silver drachm struck in the name of Alexander III the Great. The obverse displays the profiled head of Alexander as Herakles wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, facing right. The reverse displays the god, Zeus, enthroned, facing left, holding an eagle in his right hand and a sceptre in his left. The Greek inscription ΑΛΕΞΑΝ∆ΡΟΥ is written vertically to the right of the figure of Zeus. The legend, written in the genitive case, translates as ALEXANDROY, meaning [the coinage] ‘of Alexander’. There is a B mintmark in the left field and an Ν monogram below the throne. The coin was likely minted in 310-301 BC in Kolophon.
