Punu Mask - Gabon

Punu mask used in the judicial dances. The dancer bearing the mask moves dizzyingly on stilts, swinging raffia "whips"; suddenly he stops in front of someone and, pointing at them, threatens that he knows their secret and will shout it from the rooftops if they don’t give him something (a chicken, millet flour, etc.). Today it has become a commemorative festival, but in the past, the villagers offered whatever it took so that their secret would not be revealed; apparently everyone had something to hide...!
