Description from the seller
Rare vintage Rotaflex ceiling lamp. Assigned to John & Sylvia Reid
A genuine 1950s/60s vintage look but also a modern/contemporary Scandinavian look thanks to the teak wooden stem. Provides a nice warm diffuse light.
Bio:
Rotaflex was founded by Bernard Stern in 1953 and soon became one of the largest lighting companies in the UK. Rotaflex was known as a company that specialized in modern lighting with innovative materials and techniques.
The specific type of plastic, Cellulose acetate (a kind of acrylic) was an invention of Rotaflex together with the French company A.R.P. – L’ Atelier de Recherche Plastique (Plastic Research Workshop).
Little is known about the British design duo John & Sylvia Reid but they were the main designers for Rotaflex during the early years. Later they also designed furniture for Stag.
Rotaflex received, among other awards, the prestigious iF Design Awards for its ceiling lamps in 1957.
Rotaflex lamps, and specifically those by designers John and Sylvia Reid, are still regarded as classics of 20th-century lighting. They combined aesthetics with ease of use and were an example of how designers in the 50s and 60s experimented with new materials such as plastics. This gave rise to lamps that were not only practical but also made a strong visual statement.
In short, Rotaflex brought innovative lighting with a modern aesthetic that perfectly reflected the changing zeitgeist of the mid-20th century.
