Tanzanite is a blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. It, like the pink variety thulite, is used exclusively as a gemstone.
As zoisite crystallizes, tanzanite forms in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically develops transparent, prismatic to columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glassy luster on the surfaces. The cleavage planes, by contrast, shimmer more pearly.
